Stuart's History

I grew up on the south coast of NSW and started working at Ziegler surfboards at the age of 14 doing ding repairs. In 1983 I moved to the Gold Coast and worked with Richard Harvey and Dominic 'Zappa' Wybrow, I also gained influence by Thornton Fallander and Tony Dempsey. I started the 'Stuart' label in '84 and it has been going strong ever since. I have spent time refining my shapes, gaining surfing knowledge from trips to Indonesia, Fiji, Japan, New Zealand and many more tropical islands in the South Pacific, not to mention the quality Gold Coast - waves.

Main Design Features

I try to concentrate on three main designs of boards; Grovel board (fish), All Rounder and Guns. Living only 100 metres from the beach and 2kms from Burleigh Heads allows me to refine my designs on a regular basis.

Fish - Small wave board, generally wider and shorter which enables maximum speed and turning ability in small waves. A good combination to keep your hunger for waves no matter how small the surf.

All rounder - Our standard all round surfboard for use in 2 foot to 6 foot surf. This style of surfboard is suitable for point breaks to beachbreaks and is available in a variety of weights in glassing (refer to custom order sheet). Probably the most versatile style of surfboard available due to it's subtle concaves, soft 'tucked' rails and smooth rocker. It is the most common board chosen by the "pro's" when competing on the international surfing circuit.

Guns - Our bigger wave boards, have extra length to give more drive, less concave and slight vee's to enhance your turning ability whilst retaining plenty of speed and drive.

We have a large range of instock boards, both new and second hand. Custom boards are made to the customers needs, which can take around 2-4 weeks depending on how busy we are. You can place an order and pick it up if you're coming to the Gold Coast.

We have the FCS test station to try any of the FCS Fin range.   And a large range of board bags.

Come in and see us in the store and say hello to our staff that will help with all your surf-related needs.

Company Profile

Our owner and founder Xanadu, is a meticulous craftsman who has devoted his life to consistently creating the most progressive surfboard designs in the industry.

A shaper since the age of 15, Xanadu opened a surfboard factory at 17. He closed his factory after five years in business. The next four years he travelled around the world surfing contests, free surfing, and shaping in countries like Australia, Japan, Hawaii, Indonesia, South and Central America, Southeast Asia, South Pacific, Europe, and California. He moved to California permanently in 1987 and shaped for a local manufacturer until establishing his own label, Xanadu Surf Designs, in 1989.

Xanadu attributes much of his success to timing. "Instead of making a name for myself at an earlier age, I waited for the right time. I spent years travelling and learning about waves and people of various cultures around the world so that when it came time to establish my own label, I would have a more balanced approach from an artistic, business, and personal standpoint. I entered the market in 1989 because I felt the surfing community was ready for a fresh approach to surfboard design. In 1991, after riding my boards for one full year, Brad Gerlach jumped 12 places to finish the Association of Surfing Professionals tour ranked 2nd in the world." As well, Lisa Anderson won two World Titles riding Xanadu Surfboards.

Through the '90's many top professional surfers rode Xanadu Surfboards. A constant traveller, Xanadu works personally with professional surfers worldwide. Logging useful feedback, he calculates ideas that are used to refine his shapes; shapes that have earned him respect in the international surfing community.

For Xanadu, the last five years have been a time to reflect.

Xanadu Surf Designs takes pride in producing surfboards of the highest quality and performance in the industry. In the international surfing community our logo has come to symbolize innovative surfboard design and cutting edge surfing. We use only the best foam, fiberglass and glassing techniques to ensure that the quality of our finished boards is second to none. The time consuming and labor intensive experimentation that is required to produce innovative new shapes is a constant challenge that our head shaper, Xanadu, thrives on. Endless hours in the shaping room, time in the water, constructive feedback and precise refinements are all steps in the intense research and development process that he puts into each new design.

Our primary aim is to allow individuals around the globe to realise the full potential of their surfing through superior surfboard shapes of the highest possible quality. This requires commitment not only to our world tour team riders, but to any surfer anywhere who seeks to increase his or her satisfaction and enjoyment of riding waves.
